4 of The Most Unusual Cars on the Roads in 2021

Posted on: 26/04/21

The past decade has seen some significant advances in car technology, both in design and engine capacity.

Here, we explore some of the most eye-catching, forward-thinking, and futuristic cars you may actually see on the roads in 2021.

The first car comes from the Aston Martin, new for spring 2021 is the open-air, limited-edition supercar the V12 Speedster.

Priced at £765,000, the most eye-catching aspect of this supercar without a doubt is the lack of windscreen and roof. Combine this aerodynamic design feature with the 5.2 litre twin-turbo engine which peaks at 700 horsepower, and 555 pound-feet of torque, it’s no wonder this two-seater does 0-62mph in just 3.5 seconds.

Each of the 88 examples produced of this car come with a helmet and gloves, definitely desirable considering the car’s top speed of 186mph. With a carbon fibre body and interior trim, the car only comes in Skyfall silver, emphasising the plane like features of red straps found in a F/A-18 fighter jet due to the collaboration with Boeing.

Inspired by a fighter jet, some of the most unusual elements of this car come from the spine through the centre of the car, creating independent pods or cockpits for the driver and passenger.

Tesla Cybertruck

Described by Tesla as having better utility than a pickup truck and more performance than a sports car, this truck definitely delivers a very eye-catching design.

Due to start production and deliveries in 2021, this Tesla has some very unusual design features including no side mirrors, a six-seat minimalist interior with a 17-inch touchscreen, and an exterior that does seem to belong in a sci-fi movie.

It will come in three versions, with the most advanced capable of doing 0-60mph in 2.9 seconds, and a ground-breaking range of over 500 miles!

Unfortunately, we are unlikely to see the Cybertruck on the UK roads due to the very angular ‘exoskeleton’ being unlikely to provide enough pedestrian protection. Additionally, it’s unlikely the 2-metre wide truck will be squeezing down the UK’s smaller roads.

2020 McLaren Speedtail

Next on this list is the McLaren’s petrol-electric hybrid with a max speed of 250mph.

As with the McLaren F1, it has an unusual three-seat layout, with the driver at the centre, and the two passenger seats are set slightly behind on either side. A pair of HD cameras glide out when the start button is pushed, replacing traditional exterior mirrors to provide wider sightlines, better aerodynamics and even more style to this exciting car.

The eye-catching teardrop-shaped cockpit and aerodynamic 5.32 metre long carbon fibre body make this McLaren’s most aero drag efficient road car.

So how does the Speedtail perform? The 4 litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine combines with 1036bhp from the electric motor to achieve acceleration of 0-186mph in just 12.8 seconds.

If the £1.75m price tag did not put you off, unfortunately, all of the 106 Speedtails are already accounted for. Fortunately, the next car on this list is more attainable.

Tesla Model 3

Although certainly the most subtle looking car on this list, the Tesla Model 3 does have some remarkable elements to it.

This car can navigate a motorway itself, as long as your hands remain on the wheel. Exceptionally, the Model 3 claims to already be able to operate completely autonomously, and once legislation permits, may use it’s over the air update feature to upload this.

The car has Bluetooth keyless entry, where the car will sense your phone in your pocket and open automatically, or by tapping the key card to the B-pillar.

All non-driving actions inside the minimalist interior are controlled by the huge 15-inch touchscreen. As with most Tesla’s by clicking the T of the Tesla brings up easter eggs and a menu of hidden games.

If looking at these impressive cars has whetted your appetite for a new car, why not consider car leasing, combining affordable monthly payments with driving the newest models on the market.
